After seeing a need for students to have a stronger base in phonics and other foundational literacy skills, teachers started to implement Fundations in grades K-3 this school year. This resource was chosen because it is systematic and multisensory. It is systematic in that it follows a clear sequence K-3 and multisensory in that it incorporates many different ways to learn, such as tapping out sounds, writing in the air. This is shown to be highly effective- as well as fun!
Although it has taken a lot of preparation, teachers say that they are loving this program and have seen a difference in students. They can see students becoming more successful in:
- Phonemic awareness
- Phonics/ word study
- High frequency word study/ Trick words
- Reading fluency
- Vocabulary
- Handwriting
- Spelling
This is a win- and lays the groundwork for life-long literacy for our students at Central!
